activity: How Clear is Your Water?

In general, the cloudier water is, the more polluted it is. This depends on the amount of suspended solids.

What you will need:

  • 5 samples of water - tap water, distilled water and 3 other sources (this could be tap water from a different area, pond water, river water, sea water)
  • filter funnel and paper
  • several clean, dry beakers

Click here for more information on collecting water samples.

What you will do:

  1. Pour 100 cubic cm of the water sample through a filter funnel, containing a folded filter paper. Do this for each water sample in turn.
  2. Keep the filter paper from each sample.
  3. Compare the amount of solid collected from each sample.

What do you observe?

You can record your results in a table like this:

water sample observations
tap water
distilled water
sea water
pond water
river water

Questions:

  1. Put your samples in order of how much suspended solids they have. Put the water sample with the least amount of suspended solids at the top.
  2. Compare this list with your results from the pH and purity tests. Do you notice any similarities or differences?
