Fossil Fun Student Projects

The students created their own fossil molds, casts, and trace fossils.

Fossils are the remains of ancient life. Fossils are found almost exclusively in sedimentary rock. Fossils form when the remains of organisms are buried in sediments (most often in an aquataic environment) and the sediments or the remains are turned into rock.

Some types of fossils are...

Mold: The void left in a rock when the remains of an organism decomposes completely.

Cast: A duplicate of an organism formed when a mold fills with sediments that turn into rock.

Trace Fossil: The fossilized remains of tunnels, footprints, excrement, or other indications of an organism that are not part of the organism itself.
