ACTIVITIES INTRODUCTION :

Explain to the students that many older adults experience difficulty with touch and feeling due to conditions such as arthritis. Tell them that they can understand what it is like to have trouble moving their fingers and picking things up with the help of tape and gloves.

Place tape around all of the upper finger joints on the students hands so that they experience the feeling of stiff joints.

Have students place a glove on one hand to simulate a reduced sense of touch.

Each student will then participate in the following activities:

ACTIVITY 1:

  • Instruct students to attempt to tie the tennis shoes in a bow while finger joints are taped and/or gloves are on.

ACTIVITY 2:

  • Instruct students to attempt to pick out ten pennies from the jar while finger joints are taped and/or gloves are on.

ACTIVITY 3:

  • Instruct students to attempt to shuffle or deal the deck of cards while finger joints are taped and/or gloves are on.
