Meeting 2 Plan

OVERVIEW:

The meeting will take place on the premises of the retirement community or senior facility. If circumstances do not permit this, substitute another activity for the facility tour. Planned activities consist of viewing a video of students particpating in the aging simulation activities, a tour of the facility, and conducting an interview on "Issues of Aging" with prepared questions.

Appropriate for Grade Level: K-3 (May be adapted for older students.)

MATERIALS:

Worksheets are presented in Adobe® .PDF format and require the user to have the Adobe® Acrobat® Reader® Version 5 installed. Adobe® Acrobat® Reader® is free software that lets you view and print Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files. Click on the icon below to obtain the free Adobe® Acrobat® Reader® if needed.

PRE-MEETING PREPARATION:

  1. Prior to traveling to the senior facility, review the Checklist of Activities with students. Instruct students to make a check mark next to each item on the list when they have completed the task.

  2. Read the questions on the Interview Sheet out loud to the class and review the process for taking notes to record their partner's answers.

  3. Remind students that they should speak clearly when conducting the interviews and use good listening skills when their Grandbuddy is speaking.

  4. Provide each student with a name-tag printed clearly with his/her name.

  5. Provide each student with a clipboard containing the Meeting 2 Checklist and "Issues of Aging" Interview Sheet along with a pencil for note-taking.

ACTIVITY 1 - Sharing the Aging Simulations Video

  • The teacher will give a brief explanation of the aging simulations that were conducted in the classroom to the group and suggest that the older adults may wish to question their Little Buddies about their experiences with the aging simulations at the conclusion of the video.

  • Students and their Grandbuddies will watch the video together as a group. (The availability of a video projector and a large screen will make this activity much more enjoyable for the group.)

  • Teachers will lead a question and answer session following the video.

ACTIVITY 2- Interview Grandbuddy:

  • Students and Grandbuddies work together to complete the questions on the "Issues of Aging" Interview Sheet.

ACTIVITY 3- Tour of Senior Facility

  • Grandbuddies will take the students on a tour of the senior facility and return to the meeting room at a pre-determined time.

ACTIVITY 4- Thank You and Good-bye:

  • Teachers will make any announcements to the group regarding future activities and take any questions participants may have before students depart. Students thank their Grandbuddies for allowing them to visit.

Follow-Up:

  • Teacher will initiate whole group sharing of experiences with the Grandbuddies.

  • Student will begin work on the book about his/her Grandbuddy using the Story Starter: "Now that my Grandbuddy is older . . ." referring to the notes from the "Issue of Aging" Interview Sheet and illustrate the story.
