In 1935 Sir Alexander Fleming gave this sample of Penicillium mould to a colleague working with him at St Mary's Hospital, London, England.
Why is this sample so important ?
Although it may not look like much, it represents first chapter in a story about how an interesting observation led to the development of modern antibiotics.
The sample of Penicillium can now be found in the Science Museum, London.
