Bacterial Resistance
How does resistance to antibiotics develop?
Important ideas you need to know (1)
Bacteria only have one copy of each gene
Changes in the genotype will show in a changed phenotype
So it only needs one change or mutation to allow it to breakdown the penicillin
Important ideas you need to know (2)
Penicillin breaks down the bacterial cell wall so sensitive bacteria  die
Resistant bacteria produce the enzyme penicillinase which breaks down penicillin
Watch the animation
Penicillin has been added to the bacterial culture
The slides show what is happening to the numbers of different types of bacteria
Which type increases?

The  End

Don’t forget that it is the presence of the antibiotic that allows the resistant type of bacteria to grow
