The Ancient Greeks believed (notice that they didn't know) that objects on Earth consisted of a mixture of so-called basic elements:

FIRE

AIR

 

WATER

 

EARTH

And they spent most of their time trying to get their ideas about how things moved or changed in nature to match this belief.
