Skip Counting

The ability to count coins will come much easier to a student who has mastered skip counting beforehand.

Classroom Activities

Sing Your Way to Skip Counting
Children will love singing The Skip Counting Song to the tune of "Skip to My Lou"! A printable Adobe .pdf file is provided here so that teachers may photocopy the lyrics for each student to take home if desired.

Follow the Bouncing Ball
The rhythm of a plain rubber ball can help teach skip counting!

  • Organize students into cooperative groups of four or of equal sizes
  • Ask the class "Who can count the number of people in the class the fastest?"
  • Choose a student to stand up and count the class. He/she will most likely count by ones to come up with an answer.
  • Now ask the class "Is there a faster or easier way to count everyone than (student's name) used?
  • Demonstrate counting by twos to the children and then lead them in counting the class by twos.
  • Begin bouncing a ball while students skip count in unison to it's bounce.
  • Give several students (or the whole class!) a chance to come to the front of the room and bounce the ball while the others skip count in unison to it's bounce.

Pass the Paper
Cooperative table groups compete in writing to 100s by twos!

  • Organize children into cooperative table groups of four or of equal sizes.
  • Each child should have his/her own pencil.
  • Pass one sheet of paper out to each table group.
  • Explain the rules. "We are going to have a race to 100! When I say "GO" the first person at each table will write 2, the next will write 4, the next will write 6, and so on until your table has written all the way to 100."
  • Give students instructions for how they will pass the paper (ie. clockwise, counterclockwise, "to the person on your left", etc.)
  • Tell the class that the first group to finish skip counting to 100 will let you know by putting their pencils down on the table and sitting quietly.

Skip Counting Classroom Activities
Ideas from Tammy Payton - Milken National Educator '98

  • We always had one inch square grid paper. I would slice them into a
row/column so that it would display 100 squares if you counted by 2's, 5's,
and 10's. For example, the 2's paper was cut into 5 columns with 10 rows. So
the students would fill out each paper (this helps them see the pattern).

Their grid paper would look like:
    2, 4, 6, 8, 10
    12, 14, 16, 18, 20
    22, 24, 26, 28, 30
    etc. to 100

The grid paper for 5's was cut into 2 columns by 10 rows and looked like:
    5, 10
    15, 20
    25, 30
    35, 40

The grid paper for 10's was 10 columns by 1 row.
    10, 20, 30, 40, etc.

  • (Do this is a large group activity) Most teachers have a 1-100 chart in
    their room (large-about 26 X3 6 inches - I laminated mine) Then give
kids different colored vis-a-vis pens. I would have them circle all of the 2's in
one color, the 5's in a different color, and the ten's in another color.
Then we would look at the pattern each time a new group was circled.

  • (Another skip counting large group activity)
I would select a number such as 35 and circle it with a vis-a-vis on the large 100 chart in my room. I would ask different kids to come up and circle what would be 5 more than that number, what is 10 more than that number, what is 2 more than that number. We would continue randomly selecting a number and checking out what is 2, 5, or 10 more than that number.

The National Council of Teacher Mathmatics collection of Electonic Examples includes "Learning about Number Relationships and Properties of Numbers--Using Calculators and Hundred Boards: Patterns to 100 and Beyond" In this two-part example virtual hundred boards and calculators furnish a visual way of highlighting and displaying various patterns and relationships among numbers. Using calculators and hundred boards together, teachers can encourage students to communicate their thinking with others. In the first part, Displaying Number Patterns, the same patterns are displayed on a calculator and on a hundred board simultaneously. In this second part, Patterns to 100 and Beyond, students
examine number patterns, using a calculator to move beyond 100.
