| Major Taylor was very happy living with the Southard family. When he
visited his brother and sister, they were not very comfortable with him. Their life on a
farm was very different then his and they had little to talk about. He only
had one bad experience during this time. He was not allowed to exercise and play at the
Indianapolis YMCA because he was black. His friends were upset about this but even their
powerful white families could not do anything about it. Major Taylor felt very sad when
all he could do was watch his friends exercise. This was his first experience being
treated differently because of the color of his skin, but certainly not his last. |
